RESOURCES FOR PROFESSIONALS

We are in the process of collating a variety of resources that professionals might find useful and we will continue adding to this section.
Intervention resources:
  • Learning through Musical Play
  • Technology Assisted Learning
  • Relating and Communicating
Learning through Musical Play:
Musical Play Therapist, Julie Wylie, is well-known for her work using musical play to support early intervention for infants and young children with challenges to their development. Julie recognises that each child has an inherent musicality, regardless of disability and believes that music is a powerful non-verbal form of communication which helps children to feel included and safe.
  • Here are some tips for running a group music session.

Transition to School:
In 2019, the Champion Centre reviewed and revised the Transition to School Reports for teachers. Here is an outline/sample report showing the kind of material provided to teachers and the alignment of information about the child with the New Zealand  curriculum Transition to School Report. A blank 'About Me' template is also available.
  • Down syndrome: Helping children with Down syndrome reach their full potential in early childhood centres and primary school.
  • Down syndrome: International guidelines for the education of learners with Down syndrome.
  • Prematurity: Prematurity information for New Zealand educators.

A guide to support families and children with complex needs:
  • A useful guide for families was put together by an international team, including Champion Centre Founder, Dr. Patricia Champion.

Impact Lab GoodMeasure results:
  • This report measures the impact and quality of the work of the Champion Centre, including the social value it adds.
Visual supports at school and at home:
A research project funded by the Wayne Francis Charitable Trust has allowed the Champion Centre in collaboration with three other local organisations to explore how families and teachers could introduce visual supports into homes and classrooms to support children needing help to access the curriculum.

A handout on the the power of visual supports and a manual for schools was developed, and the outcomes of the project have been published in an international journal.  A copy of the journal article can be requested from: [email protected]
These resources are made freely available to support children. If you would like to acknowledge this material to The Champion Centre, your koha/gift is much appreciated. Donate online today
